Mel Mann is announcing his 27th annual folk dance cruises for 2011. They include a visit to Cairo followed by a cruise on the Nile River January 12, 2011, dancing will be led by Lee Otterholt. On June 21, 2011 there will be a visit to Lisbon followed by sailing on the Douro River (port wine area) in Portugal and dancing will be led by Roberto Bagnoli.

Worlds 2011 not to be impacted by Nashville floods
While images from the Opryland Hotel in papers and on the internet were, representatives from the hotel have said that the property will host the 2011 World Championships of Country Dance, January 3 - 9, 2011 as planned. Until the waters recede they cannot evaluate the full extent of the damage, yet the ballroom space and most of the guest rooms are safe from the flooding. Hotel representatives have told Tony Lee, Director of Worlds, that they expect the hotel to be fully operational after August, long before our World Championships. Due to this unexpected event many of the conventions that Opryland had to lose are rescheduling and it may impact the availability of rooms at the hotel during Worlds. Our room block is secure but you should book your hotel rooms now to make sure that you can get a room at Opryland. They will still give you the special $118 earlybird rate till June 15th. WHAT is the "BARCELONA DANCE AWARD"?World's Largest Dance Competition!

The event in which you will participate is the Barcelona Dance Award 2011, a competition that has established itself as the largest and most important "dance event" in Europe, divided into different categories which awards the best groups, talents, choreographers and teachers. The commission of international experts, critics and representatives from the prestigious Dance Companies will judge the Schools, Group, Companies and Dance Dep. participants. Such an initiative will encourage cultural growth through dance as a universal language and will especially serve to stimulate friendship, solidarity, respect and mutual understanding. Our org. plans these theatrical events guaranteeing top service with proven experience. It will be our responsibility to work with you from the moment you confirm your participation. The theatre program and the lodging information have all been meticulously organised and the needs which could arise will be satisfied by our staff during your stay from 21th to 25th April 2011 in the center of Barcelona!

After months of negotiation with the authorities, a Talmudist from Odessa was finally granted permission to visit Moscow . He boarded the train and found an empty seat. At the next stop, a young man got on and sat next to him. The scholar looked at the young man and he thought:

This fellow doesn't look like a peasant, so if he is no peasant he probably comes from this district. If he comes from this district, then he must be Jewish because this is, after all, a Jewish district.

But on the other hand, since he is a Jew, where could he be going? I'm the only Jew in our district who has permission to travel to Moscow.

Ahh, wait! Just outside Moscow there is a little village called Samvet, and Jews don't need special permission to go to Samvet.

But why would he travel to Samvet? He is surely going to visit one of the Jewish families there. But how many Jewish families are there in Samvet? Aha, only two - the Bernsteins and the Steinbergs.

But since the Bernsteins are a terrible family, so such a nice looking fellow like him, he must be visiting the Steinbergs.

But why is he going to the Steinbergs in Samvet? The Steinbergs have only daughters, two of them, so maybe he's their son-in-law. But if he is, then which daughter did he marry? They say that Sarah Steinberg married a nice lawyer from Budapest , and Esther married a businessman from Zhitomer, so it must be Sarah's husband. Which means that his name is Alexander Cohen, if I'm not mistaken.

But if he came from Budapest , with all the anti-Semitism they have there, he must have changed his name. What's the Hungarian equivalent of Cohen? It is Kovacs.

But since they allowed him to change his name, he must have special status to change it. What could it be? Must be a doctorate from the University. Nothing less would do.

At this point, therefore, the scholar of Talmud turns to the young man and says, "Excuse me. Do you mind if I open the window, Dr. Kovacs?"

"Not at all," answered the startled co-passenger. "But how is it that you know my name?"

"Ahhh," replied the Talmudist, "It was obvious."

May 28, 29 and 30, 2010 witness the triumphant return of Swing Dance USA's National Convention. This Memorial Day weekend event features 3 incredible nights of dancing, music, national dance competitions, and 2 full days of dance workshops at the historic St. Petersburg Coliseum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Join swing dance and music enthusiasts, social dancers and dance competitors of all ages, levels, and talents to experience the magic of the swing era.

The Historic St. Petersburg Coliseum
Built in 1924 and host to a veritable who's who of dance bands since its opening, the St. Petersburg Coliseum captures the Magic of the Swing Era at its peak when dance bands ruled the airwaves. Known as "The Finest Ballroom in the South" this fabulous venue has hosted swing legends that include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and many more. Friday features Florida's Swingin'est Big Band – the Ten O'Clock Band with special guest singer Emily Gail from Atlanta, Georgia. Embellishing the styles of Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and many other greats of the swing era, the Ten O'Clock Band captures the big sound of real swing music with five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, plus piano, bass, guitar, drums, and vocals. The band's bold and brassy sound lets you experience the classic days of swing as it was meant to be experienced. Since their formation in 1996, they have performed engagements at many of Florida's prominent venues. Tickets for Friday night's show are $22 in advance and $25 at the door. Doors open to the main ballroom at 7:30pm for dancing and competition. Live music starts at 9 pm and the dancing goes till 1 am.

Saturday, May 29, 2010 – St. Petersburg Coliseum - Vintage Night
Direct from Los Angeles, California, one of the world's premier swing dance bands, Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, hit the stage at 9 pm playing their unique brand of swing dance music. This group features jazz vocalist Hilary Alexander, who has performed with the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra and Mora's Modern Rhythmists. Jonathan Stout's guitar style has been heavily influenced by Freddie Green, Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, among other pre-bebop guitar players. The combination of Hilary, Jonathan, and the Campus Five results in one of the most danceable swing bands on the national scene today. They have traveled the world to play for major jazz festivals and were featured on an episode of the Ellen DeGeneres Show. The Campus Five released three albums, 2003's "Jammin' the Blues" and 2004's "Crazy Rhythm" and due to growing demand for their music, "Moppin' and Boppin'" was released in 2007. Tickets for Saturday night's show are $22 in advance and $25 at the door. Attendees are encouraged to sport some vintage swing dance attire and may enter a contest for prizes. Doors open to the main ballroom at 7:30pm for dancing and competition. Live music begins at 9 pm and the dancing goes till 1 am.

Sunday, May 30, 2010 – Tampa Zendah Grotto – The Grand Finale After Party
Tickets for Sunday night's show are $10 at the door. Swing dance lessons are from 6 to 7pm. THEN ... join us for FUSED TUTU. Associate Director and Principal Dancer Andre Valladon will take you on a journey from that most
romantic of ballets, Giselle, to the most classical, the Black Swan Pas de deux from Swan Lake, to a Cossack-style high flying
character dance. He then climbs on his motorcycle to take you on a wild ride for a contemporary twist - an exotic fusion of dance
forms and styles. Latin, Chinese, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Jazz, African, Modern ... all mixed together as only Kim Tuttle can do!
Special guests for this section include African expert Omoniyi Osoba, hip-hop expert Courtney Holmes and the amazing DAZZLERS from
the UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA!

The final part of the program, SOAR, is the result of a partnership between DANB and Art of the Olympians/AOTO. The common thread
between both organizations is the well-known Olympic ideal of the 'pursuit of excellence'.

Part I, The Dream, is inspired by Liston Bochette's 'Affirmation' and features Beth Ann Maslinoff with Elitsa Zafirova, Rostislav
Dzabraev and Eivar Martinez with music by Composer In Residence Stella Sung.

Part II, The Passion, inspired by Larry Young's 'Tango', features Andre Valladon and Michelle Incollingo dancing to Stella Sung's
'Tango Zarabande' , recorded live by pianist Kevin Sharpe.

'Tango' under construction. Missing its 3' round platform!
It's REALLY REALLY BIG!

Artistic Director Kim Tuttle selected sculptor Larry Young's "Tango" for the a pas de deux featuring Andre Valladon and Michele
Incollingo that is titled "The Passion". Mr. Young generously offered to provide the actual sculpture. When we explained that we
intended to tour the work, he provided permission to replicate his work and sent a smaller casting. Gainesville artist Paul
Costanza was given the job of duplicating the work so that it could be toured. You will remember Paul's work from earlier DANB
productions; the amazing Ganesh in Mata Hari, the huge jackal in Queen of the Night and the exquisite praying angels from A Mass
Celebration.

This work had to be light enough to travel AND be able to be hung or turned. Many phone calls between Paul, Kim and Larry resulted
in a magnificent piece of art. It is HUGE! Over 15 feet and absolutely gorgeous. We can hardly wait for Larry to see it!

When not on tour, the work will be on display at the Al Oerter Center of Excellence in Ft. Lauderdale; home of AOTO.

DANB Artistic Director Kim Tuttle, Associate Director/Principal Dancer Andre Valladon, Composer In Residence Stella Sung, Principal
Dancer Carla Amancio, Resident Choreographer Judy Skinner and Trainer Tim Heflin were special guests at the opening of AOTO's Center
of Excellence.

As part of the opening ceremony, dancers Andre Valladon and Carla Amancio performed Bailero.

A highlight of the event was the opportunity to meet and talk to Olympians Bob Beamon (long jump) and Cameron Myler (luge), artists
DANB hopes to work with for 2011 projects. Ms. Myler commented, "your dancers were phenomenal!"

When not on tour, art work that has been developed for SOAR will be on display at the Al Oerter Center of Excellence.

Guests were amazed at the artistry. Prior to the opening, Mr. Valladon conducted a master class at Cypress Lake High School for
advanced dance students in their performing arts program. Patty Gair, director of the program, reflected upon the time when she
studied dance in Ft. Myers and DANB came to perform when there was no other professional dance around. One of the students taking
the class remarked that she was inspired to study dance after being selected by Kim Tuttle for the role of 'Soldier' in DANB's
Nutcracker performance in Ft. Myers. All in all, a wonderful experience!

Principal dancer, ballet master, coach, and teacher to retire.

Tak Kwan Chu as 'Apollo' by Colleen Rand.

"Tak Kwan Chu turns 62 this March and retires after 49 years of dance. In 23 years of performing as Principal Dancer with DANB, he
has never missed a performance.

Born in Guangzhou, China in 1948, he trained at the Beijing Ballet School and danced with Hong Kong Ballet and Hartford Ballet
before joining DANB as Princip[al Dancer. He earned his 'Green Card' while performing with DANB and later became a US citizen. He
loves Gainesville and cares deeply for Dance Alive. As he often says, "Not Dance Alive. Dance alot!"

He was the first Chinese in America to perform the lead role in George Balanchine's masterpiece, 'Apollo'. The late Marie-Jeanne,
Mr. Balanchine's ballerina muse for 'Apollo' and other ballets, said that Mr. Chu was a great Apollo. And she was only one of
thousands who sing his praises. He performed the Nutcracker pas de deux as Cavalier for 15 years with Principal Dancer Michele
Incollingo - 23 performances in a row one year! Together they set the standard for The Nutcracker. He was memorable for the
elegance and strength and presentation that he brought to the role. He was one of very few dancers allowed to dance the title role
in William Dollar's 'Le Combat', a ballet made famous by American Ballet Theatre. He has performed the lead roles in all of the
great ballets - among them Swan Lake, Giselle and Don Quixote.

He has dignity, humor, intelligence and artistry. He is disciplined, devoted, loyal and a consummate artist and master teacher. He
brings 100% energy to every role he creates onstage, no matter how large or small.

His fellow dancers call him 'The Master'. Mr. Chu is respected and loved by all who know him. He will be greatly missed.

Choreographer Christina Helena arrived from Brazil along with her daughter and assistant to set a solo and two pas de deux on
dancers Andre Valladon and Carla Amancio. Audiences will remember her work Bailero, an exquisite pas de deux which has been seen on
TV, DANB programs at home and on tour and on YouTube. While here, Ms. Helena taught Company classes as well as advanced classes at
Pofahl Studios.

It was a delightful week! DANB looks forward to more exchanges with Ms. Helena and her company. We anticipate the exchange of
dancers and choreography, enriching both companies.

Principal Dancers Reka Gyulai and Rostislav Dzabraev joined DANB's Judy Skinner at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art for Museum
Night. Ms. Gyulai is one of the two dancers that DANB was able to employ thanks to a grant from the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 by the National Endowment for the Arts. Following performances in Delray Beach and Coconut Creek, Ms.
Gyulai traveled to Ft. Myers to set 'the fairies' from Sleeping Beauty.

In this one-person exhibition artist Galia Gur Zeev presents two series of photographs exploring family gatherings around the dining
table, which join together to form a single show. The series Table consists of a wall piece depicting the diners around the table
from a bird's-eye view; the series Seder is an elaboration of the former. In both series the table is nonexistent, and the meal did
not really take place. In both, the relevant information emerges from the black.

The Monayer Family: Three Videos by Dor Guez

In a series of videos, Dor Guez offers perspectives on ethnic identity, citizenship, and prejudice from three generations of a
Christian Arab family. Originally from the multiethnic, multifaith city of Lod-or al-Lydd as the municipality is known among
Palestinians-the Monayer family members include Jacob, the family patriarch who recounts the expulsion of al-Lydd's citizens after
the 1948 war; his son Sami, who describes growing up among Jews as an Israeli citizen while simultaneously claiming a Palestinian
identity; and Jacob's granddaughter Samira who recounts her experience of prejudice as she is mistaken for being Jewish. Counted
among 125,000 Christian Arabs in Israel, the Monayers consider themselves a minority within a minority with respect to the Muslim
population. To further complicate matters, a branch of Guez's family is Jewish.

The Confessions of Noa Weber wins Translated Book Award

Melville House's The Confessions of Noa Weber by Gail Hareven, translated from the Hebrew by Dalya Bilu, has won the 2010 Best
Translated Book Award for Fiction. Organized by Three Percent at the University of Rochester, the Best Translated Book Award is the
only prize of its kind to honor the best original works of international literature and poetry published in the U.S. over the past
year. This year the awards ceremony was hosted by Manhattan independent bookstore Idlewild Books.

The Confessions of Noa Weber is the story of a woman who leads a successful "feminist" life: she has a strong career, a wonderful
daughter she raised alone, and she is a recognized and respected author. Yet her interior life is bound by her obsessive love for

Country Dancing.

Country Dancing. Easterns was one of the very first dance events in the east and has had great crowds for 23 years.
Easterns offers the entire range of UCWDC country dance competition. We have a huge pro am. This features some of the best students in the east, dancing with their teachers. This event qualifies for the UCWDC World Championships in January.
